13 runs in 2013!!

It is never too early to start talking about resolutions/goals for 2013 and luckily I came across a fellow SPA's blog that seems to be the motivation I need for 2013 and fitness. Jill Conyers has a blog and is hosting a challenge for 2013, run 13 races in 2013. These races can be real ones and or virtual and she is opening it to all distances from 5K to full marathons to trail races. Not only will this help me be accountable but there will be giveaways throughout the year while working on this challenge. And who doesn't like a good giveaway???

I am signing up for the 13 5K's in 2013 but plan on throwing in a half marathon or 10K in there somewehere. When you sign up you grab a badge and place it on your blog/website to let everyone know about the challenge. :) Won't you join us on this awesome challenge in 2013?

I love her take on fitness from her "About Me" section, "Living a healthy life is not about perfection. It's about commitment, effort and progress! " Stop by her blog, http://jillconyers.com/ sign up for the challege and make 2013 your best yet!

Sweat Pink Ambassador!!

A few months back I came across Fit Approach and came across their Sweat Pink Ambassador link on the website.  They had me at PINK what can I say? LOL  Being that we just recently moved to Charlotte, NC it takes time to find friends and people that enjoy running or just fitness in general so I was looking for something to give me that extra added kick in the butt to keep my motivated and to get out and motivate others and meet other people!  What I love about Sweat Pink is that it really is all about motivating us women to get out and sweat a little! You don't have to be a marathon runner or even a runner in general just getting out and about and sweating is what it is all about!!  When I first came across this they were not accepting any entries as they already had a lot of ladies that currently were ambassadors.  So I patiently waited and I think I checked the website everyday so I would not miss out when they reopened it.  The morning they reopened it and were taking new applicants I jumped on it!!!  I believe I jumped up and did a little happy dance at work when I got the e-mail that said I had been accepted as a Sweat Pink Ambassador!

I could not wait to get online and order a tank top and get my PINK shoe laces! As soon as I got my package in the mail I had to put the pink laces in my new running shoes.

Photo: Love these!!!! #sweatpink

I plan on giving away a set or two of the pink shoelaces at some point on my blog perhaps with some more awesome items.  I have already given a pair of the pink laces to my sister in law who will no doubt ROCK them!

Whatever you do this weekend sweat a little or in my terms "sparkle" and give it all you got!

New Running shoes!

I LOVE when I have to go buy new running shoes!  I have pretty much worn out my current pair of Brooks that I have been running in for quite some time so it was time to start looking at what my next running shoe would be. I knew right off the bat it would be Brooks, I have tried Nike, Adidas, Reebok, and Asics and nothing fits me better or holds up better than Brooks.  So, yesterday morning as any other morning I check my e-mail and there is a Dick's Sporting Goods coupon in my inbox.  They don't often carry what I want in the store in terms of shoes but this coupon was 20% an online order...win win!  So, I started looking around and found the PureProject line (PureConnect, PureCadence, PureFlow, and PureGrit). This particular line is still supposed to provide all the normal comfort of a typical Brooks shoe just with less.

  • The PureCadence gives runners who need more stability the chance to experience the feel of a natural foot strike with a lightweight, breathable shoe.
  • For Guidance to Support runners, this shoe delivers more support through smart, streamlined features.
  • A reinforced heel counter secures the foot and the internal PDRB helps prevent overpronation.
  • A wider Nav Band locked in to the medial strike pod add extra stability in a lightweight shoe.

  • I first tried on the PureConnect but that really didn't feel right on me, the shoe felt really tight around my foot and it didn't quite have the cushioning I was looking for.  Not that I wanted a lot but the overall feel was just not for me.  I then saw the above shoe just in a different color, tried it and fell in love!  Had they had the exact shoe above there in the store I would have bought it and ran home! But instead I went home and ordered them online and used my coupon like a good savvy shopper would.  I am a heel striker most times and like the cushioning this shoe seems to provide in that area. So, now I just have to wait for them to arrive at my door and then I will be off and running and no doubt my feet will love me again.

    5K to look forward to

It doesn't matter how far or how fast you go as long as you give it your best right?  That is what I often tell myself anyways.  I just signed up to take part in the ACC Championship 5K sponsored by Harris Teeter on December 1st here in Uptown Charlotte.

Now I am not so excited about the fact that it is the ACC Championship 5K but, the proceeds from the race and any other direct donations go towards the Wounded Warrior Project.  What an excellent way to give back .  Most races I sign up for I try to make it where the proceeds are going to a good cause, I consider it a small part of my way of giving back throughout the year and doing something good for myself at the same time.

The next race I am looking to participating in is the Hot Chocolate 5K in Atlanta, GA on January 13, 2013.  I hate that the race is not coming through Charlotte but we have family in ATL so hopefully my husband has that weekend off and we can head there that weekend so I can take part in it.

I mean with a finishers mug like the one above who wouldn't want to run this 5K and better yet the charity the race is sponsoring is the Ronald McDonald House...what more reason do you need?  :)

    Who I am

Hello there! My name is Keri and I currently live in Charlotte,NC with my husband and two four legged children.  :)  I have had quite a journey from being someone who disliked exercise to loving it these days.

Back in 2004 I was living in Augusta, GA working part time (evenings) and going to school full time. It felt like I barely had enough time to study, eat and spend time with my then boyfriend that fitness was far from my mind. That slowly began to change as in 2005 we got our first dog, Harley a Lhasa Apso.  He is a rescue dog and from day one he has LOVED going for walks and being outside.  I would walk him every morning before heading off to class and then when I would get home in the afternoon right before heading to work.  On the nights (rare) that I did not work I would also go with him and my boyfriend for a walk in the evening.

I started seeing small changes in how my clothes fit....you think that would really make me jump on the fitness wagon...not quite yet.  I tried running a mile or two here and there but I was carrying more weight on me that it just plain hurt and was not fun at all. That spring we started playing some tennis here and there and that was good, I enjoyed that.  However we didn't get to play as much as we liked due to our schedules.  In the spring of 2006 my then boyfriend became my fiance as he proposed to me in Charleston, SC on a little weekend getaway.  That was really when I turned the corner on fitness and made time for it.  I decided at that moment, it was almost like switch that I didn't want to go shopping for wedding dresses being a size 12.  Now there is nothing wrong with that size I just decided that it was not for me and I could be a better, fitter me.  We  both started working out for an hour everyday after class/work and it was amazing the changes I started seeing!  I loved going to the gym and getting on the elliptical machine and tuning out for 45 minutes then doing some weights and sit ups.  My clothes became looser and looser soon to the point where I had to buy new pants just to go to work. I was so proud when I go to go wedding dress shopping and was in a single size, a size I had not been since early high school!  I kept at it and started eating better and making time for exercise.  I even signed up for a tennis class in college, I would have NEVER done that before.  I just felt so much better exercising, no more headaches except an occasional one here and there.  By the time the wedding came along in May of 2007 I was buying my very first bikini as an adult to go on our honeymoon with, talk about EXCITED.  I had worked so hard and it really paid off, it was a great feeling!

The summer of 2007 we moved to Jacksonville, FL as my husband's job training took us there. It was there that I got the running bug.  I started with a few 5K's and loved them! I then pushed myself to do a 10K then a half marathon! It was great I could run and just about eat what I wanted (within reason of course) and stay at my same weight. Plus the weather and landscape was great in FL, great temps nearly year round except in the summer if I didn't run in the morning that was out of the question later.

My husband's training then took us to Nashville, TN!!  I was really looking forward to the move as I was ready to experience the changing of the seasons and see the leaves change. I didn't think how it would change my fitness routine however.  Initially we were so busy moving everything in that it was a lot of physical work so I didn't notice that much of a change however as I began to slack off, we moved in the summer and it was HOT and HUMID that I didn't run very much at all.  It also didn't help that the area we moved to was more industrial so not many neighborhoods or sidewalks for that matter to run.  There were some green ways there but I hated the idea of driving somewhere to exercise, I just really enjoying heading out the front door for a run and running back to it. So...this is where I fell off the wagon a little bit.  I did not totally let myself go as they say but I did not have the same passion as I did in Florida.  It was when we had been in Tennessee a little over a year that we decided we wanted to get serious again about staying fit.  We ordered P90X and I have to admit I was asking myself what I had committed to after we ordered it.  We started it and I was sore the first week and then we got used to it.  The issue with it for us was that it was 90 minutes a day and that was tough for us to commit to with our jobs and other commitments. We did the best we could and I must say that my husband saw better results than I did.  I then started doing my Jillian Michaels DVD's that helped me so much in Jacksonville, FL.  About the time we really got into a bit of a routine it was time to move yet again.  And before you ask....yes I was totally over moving every few years.

This time our move took us to where we are today, Charlotte, NC.  This will be home for some years to come and where we will start a family. It is closer to some of my family and yet not too far from my husbands.  We moved in July of 2012 and I must say so far we really love it here in Charlotte.  We are renting a house where there are tons of sidewalks, neighborhoods and other people frequently out exercising.  We have recently found many green ways around our area and have taken to riding bikes around there.  My husband does not run with me as he has foot issues after running so I typically run during the week and then we mountain bike on the weekend together.  It has really helped me get back on track and I LOVE IT!  I have promised myself to always make time for fitness and not get back in a slump as easy as it sometimes can be to do.
